What is the process to make glacial acetic acid?

Glacial acetic acid(GAA CAS64-19-7) is a highly concentrated form of acetic acid with a purity level of 99.5% or higher. It is called “glacial” because it solidifies at room temperature, forming a clear, colorless ice-like substance. Here are the steps to make glacial acetic acid:

Materials needed:
▪Concentrated acetic acid (at least 99%)
▪Distilled water
▪Ice or a refrigeration unit
▪Glass or plastic container with a tight-fitting lid
▪Safety equipment (gloves, goggles, and a fume hood)

Procedure:
1.Put on safety equipment, including gloves and goggles, and work in a well-ventilated area or under a fume hood.
2.Pour the concentrated acetic acid into the glass or plastic container, leaving a small amount of space at the top.
3.Slowly add distilled water to the container while stirring constantly. The ratio of acetic acid to water should be about 1:1.
4.Continue adding distilled water until the temperature of the mixture drops to around 15°C (59°F). You can achieve this by placing the container in a refrigeration unit or by adding ice to the mixture and stirring until the desired temperature is reached.
5.Once the temperature has dropped, close the container with a tight-fitting lid and allow the mixture to cool further to room temperature (around 25°C or 77°F).
6.As the mixture cools, acetic acid will crystallize and solidify in the container. You can either leave it as a solid or gently warm the container to melt the crystals and obtain liquid glacial acetic acid.

It is essential to handle concentrated acetic acid with care, as it can be hazardous to health and cause chemical burns. Always wear safety equipment and work in a well-ventilated area or under a fume hood.
