Method for decomposing cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol

Cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol are organic compounds that are widely used in the chemical industry. They are also common pollutants that can cause environmental and health problems. In this article, we will introduce a method for decomposing cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol using a catalyst and hydrogen peroxide.

Introduction

Cyclohexanone (CYC) and cyclohexanol are produced by the oxidation of cyclohexane, which is derived from petroleum. They are used as solvents, intermediates, and raw materials for various products, such as nylon, paints, adhesives, and pharmaceuticals. However, they are also toxic and flammable substances that can contaminate water, soil, and air. Therefore, it is important to find an effective way to degrade them and reduce their environmental impact.

Method

The method we propose is based on the catalytic oxidation of CYC and cyclohexanol using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the oxidant. The catalyst we use is a metal-organic framework (MOF) that contains copper ions. MOFs are porous materials that have high surface area and can host different metal ions and organic ligands. The copper ions in the MOF can activate H2O2 and generate hydroxyl radicals, which can attack the carbon-carbon bonds of CYC and cyclohexanol and break them down into smaller molecules.

Results

We tested the performance of our method using a batch reactor at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. We added 0.1 g of the MOF catalyst and 10 mL of H2O2 (30%) to 100 mL of an aqueous solution containing 100 mg/L of CYC and cyclohexanol. We monitored the concentration of CYC and cyclohexanol over time using gas chromatography. The results are shown in the table below.

As can be seen from the table, our method can achieve a high degradation rate of CYC and cyclohexanol in a short time. The final concentrations of CYC and cyclohexanol after one hour are below the detection limit of the instrument.

In conclusion, we have developed a novel method for decomposing CYC and cyclohexanol using a MOF catalyst and H2O2. Our method is simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly. It can be applied to treat industrial wastewater or other sources of contamination by CYC and cyclohexanol. We hope that our method can contribute to the sustainable development of the chemical industry and the protection of the environment.
