2-Chloropropene: Properties, Production, and Applications

Properties of 2-Chloropropene

2-Chloropropene, also known as 2-chloro-1-propene,Isopropenyl chloride (CAS557-98-2), is a colorless or yellowish liquid with a pungent odor. It is slightly soluble in water, and highly reactive with other chemicals such as metals, bases, and acids. Furthermore, Isopropenyl chloride can cause burns if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes.

Production of 2-Chloropropene

The production of 2-chloro-1-propene starts with propylene, which is chlorinated in the presence of a catalyst such as ferric chloride. The reaction results in a mixture of 1-chloro-2-propene and 2-chloro-1-propene. The mixture is then separated by fractional distillation, with 2-chloro-1-propene being the predominant product. It is worth mentioning that the production process of 2-Chloropropene has significant environmental and health hazards which need to be carefully managed.

Applications of 2-Chloropropene

2-Chloropropene is primarily used as a building block in the production of various chemicals such as epichlorohydrin, allyl alcohol, and allyl chloride. These chemicals are utilized in various sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and polymer industries. For instance, epichlorohydrin and allyl alcohol are important monomers in the synthesis of polymers such as polyamides and polyesters. Additionally, 2-chloro-1-propene can also be used in the production of synthetic rubber and resins.

Safety and Regulatory Issues

As mentioned earlier, 2-Chloropropene poses several hazards both to human health and the environment. It is toxic if swallowed or inhaled, and can cause irritation to the skin and eyes. Moreover, the production and use of Isopropenyl chloride can result in air and water pollution. Therefore, the regulatory bodies such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have set limits on the amount of 2-chloro-1-propene that can be released into the environment. Additionally, people who work around Isopropenyl chloride must ensure proper handling procedures such as wearing of personal protective equipment to prevent exposure.
Overall, 2-Chloropropene is a significant chemical with several industrial applications. However, its production and use should be carefully managed to prevent hazards to both human health and the environment.
